(1880-1956) Менкен, Генри ЛуисЖурналист, эссеист, критик, лингвист. Начинал как репортер уголовной хроники (1899), с 1906 в газете "Балтимор сан" [ Baltimore Sun]. Особую известность принесли ему репортажи с "Обезьяньего процесса" [ Monkey trial]. Непримиримый противник косности, он прославился новаторскими взглядами на литературный процесс в США (сборник эссе "Предрассудки" ["Prejudices"] (1919-27)), на историю и современное состояние мировых религий ("Трактат о богах" ["A Treatise on the Gods"] (1930, переработан в 1946)), на сущность демократии, политики, морали, науки. Большое значение имеет его лингвистический труд "Американский язык" ["The American Language"] (1919, переработанные издания 1921, 1923, 1936, и приложения к нему 1945 и 1948).
